Under German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other European leaders, Europe increased its reliance on Russian gas to power homes and industry to 30% of requirements. Then Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukraine pushed Europe to stop buying gas from Russia, but they were entirely dependent upon Russian gas and were reluctant to do so. Then someone blew up the gas pipeline and until now, we knew not who, nor why.
