This course is a continuation from Portuguese Upper-Intermediate 3 and is for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use with approximately 300 hours of Portuguese required. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course aims to build higher level comprehension and communication skills in higher intermediate Portuguese and a review of cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of higher level language principles.

- Understanding and discussing further the work of Fernando Pessoa’s heteronyms Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos
- Analysing selected poems by distinct Portuguese writers – e.g. Florbela Espanca and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen

- Knowing some historic Portuguese tales
- Understanding and discussing some important figures of the Portuguese History
- Oral comprehension of texts in the areas of, social issues, travelling, gastronomy, recreation, arts and culture and everyday living.
- Understanding the meaning of Portuguese idiomatic expressions (cont’d)
- Knowing Portuguese gastronomy, customs, traditions and products
- The Subjunctive – Present, Imperfect, Future and compound tenses, Verbs conjugated with object pronouns (revision)
- Adverbs, Homophones, Homographs, paronyms, homonyms
- Prepositions – (revision)
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Communicate in fluent Portuguese.
- Use advanced Portuguese skills in conversation in both social and business settings.
- Exhibit the skills, vocabulary and study attitude required for continued study of Portuguese.
If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
