The hottest contemporary movie franchises are of graphic novel superheroes but they are only the latest iteration of stories that go back to the beginning of stories. Join us for a fun expedition back in time to discover characters with powers, swords, capes, and/or masks, who appear out of nowhere to rescue us from the oppressor then disappear again: from demigods to outlaw heroes, explorers and rescuers, pirates and bushrangers, to those with secret identities, from oral stories to books, and on to film and television. Why do we need these stories?

- Describe the connections between various heroes through time, and across genres
- Identify their favourite heroes, stories, novels and films
