This short intensive course will enable the student to refresh and practice basic knowledge in order understand and be understood on the student’s tourist or business trip to a German speaking country. The student will be able to greet people, make simple conversations, order food, ask for directions, seek help if needed, provide explanations and travel on public transport. Students will learn phrases and how to communicate and explain; important symbols and signs; money; safe travel; and an introduction to the culture for a happy and successful trip creating wonderful memories, and some useful vocabulary for unplanned events like sickness or an accident.
- Meeting, greeting and engaging with native speakers in a variety of everyday situations
- Introducing themselves and sharing some information on their family and background
- Asking questions and understanding simple responses in conversational settings such as travelling, shopping, and tourist destinations
- Making themselves understood in a hotel and restaurant setting
- Understanding important signs and symbols
- Identifying and using currency
- Short introduction to the German health system and some relevant vocabulary
- Guidelines for safe travel including customs, avoiding hot spots, asking for help, safe eating and travel guides
- An introduction to the German culture which may include food, religion, ethnic groups, customs and some history
- Short introduction to different German speaking cultures and accents
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Introduce themselves, greet people, exchange courtesies and information
- Ask questions, ask for assistance, order food, shop and travel
- Engage in simple but effective communication
- Know the values of money (coins and notes) and customs of tipping
- Travel with an awareness of personal safety
- Identify and use courteous customs
