Vicksburg was the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. After holding out for more than forty days, the garrison finally surrendered on July 4. Nearby lies the USS Cairo, one of the first American ironclad warships. We look at the role of the Mississippi in the American Civil War.
