In this course, we look at the different circumstances in which Australia’s eight capital cities [Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Brisbane and Canberra] were built, and key events in their histories. From Darwin, almost wiped out twice by air attack in 1942, and Cyclone Tracey, in 1975, to Walter Burley-Griffin’s grand plan for Canberra, we will examine the big events – and differences between - each city. We’ll also look at their quirky characteristics, from AFL mad-Melbourne to Perth’s Fremantle Doctor.
