Winter is the perfect season to bring out the knitting needles and yarn and discover the joys of knitting. Designed for beginners, this short course will take students through the basics of the craft, from learning how to hold knitting needles, to working simple stitches, all the way to making their own scarf or cosy cowl for the cooler months.

COURSE OUTLINE
- How to hold knitting needles and carry yarn
- Casting on and casting off
- Learning how to knit and purl
- Mastering the basic stitches, including the garter stitch and stocking stitch
- Adding basic trimming to Winter accessories (e.g. tassels to a scarf)
- Joining seams
- Troubleshooting mistakes, such as a dropped stitch
- Reading a basic Winter pattern (e.g. a scarf or cowl)
- Knitting a simple Winter accessory
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Knit basic stitch patterns, such as the garter stitch and stocking stitch
- Read and follow a basic knitting pattern for Winter
- Knit a simple Winter accessory
MATERIALS LIST
- 4x 100g ball of 8ply (DK) yarn in any colour (except white, black or navy). Yarn is stocked at Spotlight, Lincraft, Big W, Kmart, Riot Art & Craft
- 1x set of knitting needles in the size recommended on the label of the chosen yarn
- 1x darning needle
IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
