Inspired by STOMP, the world-renowned percussion group and stage show from the United Kingdom, this course is designed for those interested in making music in a group using body percussion and everyday household objects. Basic rhythms, percussion techniques and musical compositions will be learned in an enjoyable and relaxed ensemble setting. Whether it is drumming on a milk jug, shaking a salt shaker, or beating on a tea kettle, this course is perfect for anyone wanting to try something new and have fun with others. Please bring a small household object to be used as musical instrument, a notebook, a folder for storing music, and a pencil.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to duration in music with an examination of beat, time, tempo, rhythm and notation.
  • Discussion of how to interpret and perform basic rhythms.
  • Introduction to percussion performance techniques using the body and everyday household objects.
  • Creation and performance of music compositions using the body and household objects in a group.
  • Practice and performance of a group percussion routine.
  • Rhythmic improvisation using the body and household objects in a group setting.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand key concepts of duration in music regarding beat, time, tempo, rhythm and notation.
  2. Aurally identify the beat and basic rhythms.
  3. Create and improvise rhythmic patterns using body percussion and household objects.
  4. Perform percussion pieces as part of a group.
