Africa and Latin America are renowned for their upbeat, engaging and rhythmically intricate music traditions. This course examines world music soundscapes, with a particular focus on the cultural significance, key features, and instruments found in African and Latin American music. The course will also explore the impact of cultural exchange between the two regions on their music. Students will be provided the opportunity to further extend their knowledge of each region's music by learning one African and one Latin American song.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • The cultural significance of African music, with a spotlight on its rhythmic and melodic features and instruments.
  • The role and function of Latin American music, highlighting common rhythms and instruments.
  • Listen to instrument demonstrations from each region.
  • Discuss the intercultural exchange between Africa and Latin America and the impact on their musics.
  • Learn and perform of one African and one Latin American song.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the key musical characteristics of African and Latin American music.
  2. Understand the impact of intercultural exchange on African and Latin American music
  3. Develop and/or expand upon listening, analytical and performance skills relating to African and Latin American music.
