A short story is the perfect introduction to creative writing for those tentatively exploring the craft. It can also offer fun, creative relief for those who are more accustomed to writing lengthier projects, or within the confines of a non-fiction genre, such as academic work, copywriting and journalism. Students will be given a variety of exercises designed to unlock the inspirational power of personal experience and to help them to gradually compose a short story of 500 words or less. Please bring a pen and paper or a device to write with.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Writing a captivating short story of 500 words or less
  • Drawing on personal experiences and encounters as a source of inspiration
  • Using a variety of writing tools and techniques, including speed writing and visual/written stimuli, to overcome writer’s block
  • Mastering the art of helpful and constructive feedback, as well as editing and proofreading

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write a captivating short story of 500 words or less.
  2. Thwart writer’s block with the help of a range of tools and techniques, including speed writing and visual/written stimuli.
