For students who have completed Ancient Greek language studies to a high intermediate or advanced standard or who wish to brush up on previous studies of the language. A detailed reading of Homer's epics focuses on Homeric dialect and epic composition, alongside the story of the Trojan war and its main heroes. Books 16 and 18 cover Patroclus' death and Achilles' grief.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Books 16 and 18 will be studied in their entirety
  • Consideration of the books in the context of the whole Iliad
  • Study of language, dialect and hexameter metre
  • Consideration of epic composition and cultural contexts
  • Exploration of heroic values

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand unabridged passages from Homeric epic.
  2. Understand Homeric language differences and formulaic use.
  3. Discuss aspects of the "Homeric Question" and composition.
  4. Discuss heroic values as they appear in the Iliad.
