Join us in this course to greatly improve your painting skills! Every 1-2 weeks we progress through beginner to intermediate paintings. Learn effective brushwork techniques and memorable concepts that will help you improve quickly, and being informed in all subjects of painting: still life, figure and landscape. Using chosen reference images, this course will provide the practical painting knowledge every beginner/intermediate should know.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Basics of Painting: How to make a painting from start to finish, the processes, brush techniques, colouring and details.
  • Simplifying and Detailing: How to take a painting from simple to detailed
  • Other techniques: Learn techniques from various old and contemporary painters, as well as analysing different effective paintings
  • Palette and Colour Theory: How to use colour effectively to create desired effects.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Paint and copy images accurately and realistically
  2. Use and mix colours with confidence
  3. Mimic other styles and apply knowledge to achieve desired results.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Acrylic paint set: crimson/red, lemon/cadmium yellow, ultramarine/phathlo blue, burnt umber, black and white (other colours optional) Brands such as reno art, mont marte, derivan matisse, or student/professional brands all work well.
  • Brush set 3-10, small to bigger brushes, detail brushes, filbert brush (must), flat brush, round brush
  • Water container and palette for mixing, rag for drying
  • Canvas (medium size e.g. 20 x 30cm, 30x40cm, 40 x 50cm range)

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
