Examine the history making flights of Charles Kingsford-Smith and other Australian pilots between 1919 and 1940. We look at the England to Australia air race (1919), Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm’s flight from California USA, to Brisbane, Australia (1928), and a number of other pioneering flights. 

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Post WWI: the England to Australia air race (1919), crossing of Bass Strait (1919) and other pioneering flights
  • Kingsford-Smith's USA to Australia flight, and flights across the Tasman (together with earlier attempts)
  • Kingsford-Smith and the Coffee Royal affair: the loss of search pilots in the Tanami Desert

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the significance of pioneering flights to Australia
  2. Recognise the achievements of Kingsford-Smith and other pilots in taking on the risk-reward of these early flights.
