This short course takes a deep dive into the much-beloved orchestral work by Edward Elgar, the Enigma Variations. We will discuss how the work is structured, how the ‘Enigma’ theme is developed in each of the variations, and how each of the variations were inspired by the people in Elgar’s life and their personal oddities and idiosyncrasies. We will also ponder the multitude of theories posed by musicologists and professional musicians as to what the ‘Enigma’ may be- and we may just crack the case ourselves!

  • A brief biography of Edward Elgar and his role in late Victorian/ Edwardian cultural landscape
  • Notable other works by Elgar
  • Analysis of the Enigma Variations: structure, thematic presentation, notable individuals who inspired each of the variations
  • Notable theories on what the ‘Enigma’ may be

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Articulate the significance of Elgar’s musical output in the context of Great Britain at the turn of the century
  2. Identify the main theme of the Enigma Variations and articulate how the theme is utilised in each of the variations of the work
  3. Identify key individuals from Elgar’s life who influenced the variations
  4. Discuss the theories and hypotheses pertaining to the nature of the ‘Enigma’ itself
