George Lambert was born in Russia and educated in England, he arrived in Sydney at the age of 13 and was exhibiting works from the age of 21. We examine his life, including his arrival on the Sydney scene, success as an illustrator and portrait painter, study in Paris, and later work as a war artist and sculptor.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • George Lambert’s early life, born in St Petersburg, Russia, education in England and arrival in Australia, attending Julian Ashton art school at night, and working in country NSW.
  • Lambert’s success as an artist, focussing on rural themes, his marriage and work in London and Paris, and work as an official Australian war artist during WWI
  • Lambert’s subsequent return to Australia and key works, including the sculpture of Henry Lawson in the Domain.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the life and work of Lambert in the context of the late 19th and early 20th century Australian art scene
  2. Understand the different phases of Lambert’s work: in portraiture, landscape and still life
