“In 1870 everything changed”. Historians trace the great art movements of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to the 60 years spanning the Victorian Era, World War One and then onto the 1930s. Who were these artists who taught the world to see afresh? ‘Travel’ with us to France, Italy, England and the Pacific, on a great exploration of ideas, memory and colour.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Social changes in the 1870s and ideas developing in art, science and philosophy
  • The development in photography in the mid to late Victorian era
  • The decade or when the French Impressionists lived in London
  • The Impressionists returned to France from England after the Franco-Prussian War. What had they learned in London?
  • Examine Monet, Manet, Berthe Morrisot, Mary Cassatt and others. What did painting in series teach these artists?
  • The experiences of some of the artists who sketched and painted during World War One
  • The Post Impressionists: Pierre Bonnard in France and Paul Gauguin in the Pacific and the women painting at this time

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a grasp of what lead to great changes in the 1870s
  2. Understand the complexities of thought in the Victorian era
  3. Have an understanding of the origins of photography and its development
  4. Understand the ways WW1 impacted artist’s lives and their work
  5. Have an understanding of the often-forgotten women who worked as artists over these decades
