Central America is an essential region in the Americas, serving as a land bridge between North and South America and providing access to two oceans, making it a historic crossroads for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. The region is home to some of the most important archaeological sites of ancient civilisations, such as the Olmec and Maya cultures. It is also renowned for its unique biodiversity, which includes a wide range of ecosystems, including rainforests, cloud forests, coastal wetlands, and mountains filled with volcanoes. These natural wonders shape the diverse landscapes of Central America.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Brief introduction: The countries of the region, main facts, culture, and lifestyle.
  • Land and Environment: Discuss the region’s geography and landforms, such as rugged mountain ranges, volcanoes, coastal areas, valleys, and tropical forests.
  • Highlights of Central America: Discover some of the most iconic wonders of the region, including Maya archaeological sites in Guatemala and Honduras, the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef, Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and its surroundings (Panama), and the colonial city of Granada in Nicaragua.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, student should be able to:

  1. Have a general understanding of Central America and the countries that make up part of the region, and learn what makes it so special.
  2. Identify some of the most recommended highlights of the region, including its most visited and accessible attractions.
