...The second largest immigrant group to Australia during the 19th century came as much from Push factors (transportation, the Famine, the Civil War, the Troubles) as from any Pull factors. They entered mainly on the lower rungs of society, and yet were successful colonisers of the ‘Irish Empire’, investing their values, sense of humour, talents, and labour into today’s Australia. About 30% of the population can claim some Irish heritage, a good reason to look at significant characters and characteristics, events and cultural products that the Irish have created here, as well as the history and culture that created them.
