A fun, musical and original way to learn Italian. Ideal for students who need to see and hear content repetitively to learn more efficiently. Brief extracts from classic, unforgettable Italian songs are used to learn more about grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and pronunciation. Each lesson will start with an introduction to a particular Italian singer/songwriter/band to provide students with the historical / cultural context in which music was created. Then a couple of songs will be used to go deeper into grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and conversation.

  • Introduction to general vocabulary related to Italian music
  • Sanremo: the main Italian singing festival
  • Italian music right after WWII
  • Fabrizio De Andre’ and Francesco De Gregori: the poets who made history thanks to their ballads.
  • Cover bands and progressive music in the 60s
  • Lucio Battisti: the main voice of the 70s
  • Pop and commercial successes in the 80s and 90s
  • Vasco Rossi and Ligabue: the main 2 Italian rockstars for entire generations
  • Cesare Cremonini: the modern poet

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have conversations about song and music genres they like and dislike
  2. Learn general vocabulary related to music, concerts, etc.
  3. Learn or revise grammar points found in the songs discussed and listened in class
  4. Learn vocabulary and idiomatic expression found in the songs discussed and listened in class
  5. Learn more about Italian history / culture
