This is a continuation from Latin Intermediate 3. The closeness of inspection in reading Latin fosters precision in the use of words. It also provides a model for careful reading and writing of English. Each meeting will look at some aspects of Roman history and culture, in the context of the study of the language. Even a modest acquaintance with Latin automatically extends your English vocabulary. Classes will consist of a minimum of 1.5 hours virtual class time, together with 30 minutes worth of work to be completed independently. You will be able to contact your tutor by email or phone to ask for guidance and feedback on this work. In addition tutors may set additional homework.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Develop at an appropriate level, a competence in Latin.
  2. Read, understand, appreciate and make a personal response some of the literature in the original language.
  3. Acquire some understanding of the civilization within which the literature studied was produced.
  4. Develop a sensitive and an analytical approach to language by seeing English in relation to a language of very different structure and by observing the influence of the ancient language on our own.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
