Shakespeare was the master of characterisation and his vile villains showcase the worst in human nature and yet are marvellously entertaining. We explore the who’s who of the best of Shakespeare’s vile villains whom we love to hate.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • A selection of villains from Shakespeare’s plays including the schemers, the murderers and the megalomaniacs
  • Characters’ motivation and characters’ ends
  • Famous quotations of the villains

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify a selection of Shakespeare’s villains and the plays in which they occur
  2. Identify the motivations of characters and the nature of their villainy as a comment on the nature of the human condition.
