The Blues is the foundation of all popular, soul and jazz genres. In tonight’s class we will see the origins of the Blues in Mississippi and follow it through Memphis to Chicago. We will see and hear many rare and, in some cases, forgotten highlights of Blues music. The class will also survey the giants of Blues including Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, BB King, Little Walter Jacobs and many others.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the Blues: The Mississippi Delta. Blues beginnings, Charley Patton, Rober Johnson and others.
  • The Blues becomes popular. From entertainment of Plantations, the Blues goes to Chicago where it is electrified and the Blues Band is invented.
  • The Blues becomes cyclical from the 1960s. It inspirers the British music scene and in the USA develops players like Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the structure and development of Blues music
  2. Appreciate and identify the music of many of its major players
