Each of the micro nations of Europe has a unique and intriguing history. San Marino was not part of the 1871 unification of Italy. The Vatican is a sovereign state entirely within the city of Rome. Without a male heir Monaco will revert to the republic of France. Malta became a republic in 1974 but what is its relationship with Britain, NATO and Europe today? Liechtenstein and Luxembourg are constitutional monarchies with a Prince and a Grand Duke as heads of state. Along with the Vatican and Monaco they are 4 of the wealthiest nations in the world.
