Be the Big Kahuna at your next beach party with your newly acquired ukulele skills. The ukulele is fun, it's easy, small and inexpensive. Learn to perform your favourite songs from any era or style, solo or with a group. If you have ever wanted to play a musical instrument this is probably the easiest way to make a start. Please bring your ukulele (available in all musical instrument shops starting at around $50) to the first lesson.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Essential parts of the ukulele, tuning, basic strumming. One finger chords (C, C7, Am) and songs to play with them
  • With the introduction of a third chord, ‘G’ hundreds of songs in many different styles will now be playable, including: Blues, Rock and Country
  • The Classic I/ vi/ iv/ V chord progression and a selection of the many songs that use it
  • Melody/solos – Learn to pick single notes to play tunes, riffs and accompaniments

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the essential parts of the ukulele (strings, frets, etc.), tune their instrument and know how to hold, strum and pluck the ukulele.
  2. Play a range of basic chords including: C, C7, Cmaj7, Am, F, G, G7, D, D7 and Em as well as change from one chord to another.
  3. Consider Tone and Expressive Techniques.
  4. Perform a variety of easy songs in a range of styles from traditional to popular.
  5. Accompany one’s self and others singing or playing.
  6. Entertain yourself and others performing solo or as part of an ensemble and know how to build upon the foundation of your introduction to the ukulele.
