Over the course of one four-hour session, students will discover and explore how to produce an engaging narrative within two of the most popular genres of creative writing: fiction and creative non-fiction. Part of the journey will involve understanding the conventions of each and how to not only adhere to but also challenge the expectations of genre. Students will be guided in how to take advantage of their personal experiences and previous work expertise so as to enrich their writing, as well as the importance of research in filling knowledge gaps and creating authentic experiences for their readers. Please bring pen and paper or a device to write with.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Exploring and analysing the tropes, conventions and expectations of fiction and creative non-fiction
  • Writing within the fiction and creative non-fiction genres
  • Learning how to use a combination of personal experience, knowledge and research in order to create a rich, authentic and engaging narrative
  • Using speed-writing to develop a first-draft and to regularly exercise the writing muscle
  • Mastering the art of proofreading, editing and providing oneself with honest, helpful and constructive feedback at each stage of writing

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify texts from fiction and creative non-fiction and explain the expectations and conventions of both genres
  2. Compose an engaging and authentic narrative within the fiction or creative non-fiction genres
  3. Know how to use personal experience, previous work expertise and research to enrich their work
