COURSE OUTLINE
- Identifying what makes a narrative engaging and authentic for its reader
- Understanding genre and discovering how to work within and/or challenge its boundaries
- Using a combination of lived experience and research to enrich writing
- Finding different ways to commence writing and overcoming those initial writing blocks
- Understanding structure and its various effects on plot development and the experience of the reader
- Creating immersive settings
- Establishing a writing routine and practicing self-discipline
- The importance of knowing how to provide oneself with constructive feedback at every stage of writing
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course students should be able to:
- Exercise self-discipline and commit to a writing routine
- Control their inner critic and allow themselves to write a raw, first draft
- Use a combination of personal, lived experience and research to write within a genre of their choice
- Provide constructive, helpful and specific feedback when editing and proofreading
