A selection of natural wonders from around the world are looked at in groups of sites of a particular type: glacial, volcanic, coastal, fluvial, deserts, mountains. Three or four examples will be used in each case, all of which can potentially be visited by tourists. Many photographs and other illustrative material will be used.

  • Glacial - Norway, New Zealand, Iceland, Alaska
  • Volcanic - Rotorua, Etna and Stromboli, Yellowstone, Iceland
  • Coastal - Great Barrier Reef, Bangladeshi mangroves, Nile Delta, Azores
  • Fluvial - Great Lakes, Amazon, Danube, Yangtze
  • Deserts - Sahara, Tanami, Death Valley, Atacama
  • Mountains - Himalayas, Andes, Sierra Nevada, Australian Alps

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Gain an introductory knowledge of types of natural sites
  2. Learn about a number of natural wonders of the world
  3. Consider visiting one or more of these sites
  4. Also gain an interest in other natural wonders
